Cozy living space

Light has a unique effect on the atmosphere and the perception of space. In the case of a private residence project in Lower Austria, Austria, it was particularly important to Michael Karasek of the architectural firm Baukooperative—especially given the building’s large volume—to create a sense of warmth and security. He achieved this through lighting, highlighting key areas and creating spaces where people can relax and simply be.

In harmony with nature

The exceptional location of this residential project is truly rare. The entire project revolves around the goal of integrating the building into its surroundings as harmoniously as possible, connecting the home with nature. Inside, one can see the attention to detail in every corner of the 2,600-square-meter living space; every element has been carefully designed.

Create a viewpoint and experience

The seamless wooden roof structure, supported by a steel column system, is designed to create a glass connection between the ground floor and the upper level. This is the only way to achieve stunning, unobstructed views and a profound sense of space, while maximizing natural light. The natural stone walls in the pool area serve as a bridge between the interior and exterior spaces.

Natural and artificial light sources

Since the client is a visual artist with a particular interest in shapes and colors, it was crucial to pay close attention to both natural and artificial lighting during the design process. The minimalist design, the elegant lighting design language, and the excellent, well-organized product catalog all played a key role in the selection of the lighting manufacturer.

Bright and airy, dark and cozy

These spotlights highlight paintings or textured surfaces, while MOVE IT track lighting illuminates the walkways. On the upper floor, the lighting concept relies primarily on indirect lighting from MINO, distinctive accent lights, and dimmable fixtures.

The ground floor is bright and open, designed as a solid block with a plaster-effect paint finish. The upper floor has a light and airy feel (steel and wood structure), but the colors and materials chosen are dark and cozy. The lighting system follows a similar approach: on the ground floor, artificial light sources are carefully selected, with XAL JUST and BO spotlights arranged in groups.

“The entireinterior design process—from lighting to sofas—was a great joy to undertake, from the initial concept to the finished product. I would describe the result as perfectly imperfect. This experience was truly special and will surely stay with me and influence me for the rest of my life.”

“Lightand shadow; without shadow, there is no light. The interplay between light and dark areas, the striking contrast. This creates the atmosphere in the room, this mood—and when it is conveyed to those who live there, the room becomes special.”
