David Chipperfield, Ilse Crawford, and Jasper Morrison create non-electric lamps for Wästberg
Excerpt from Architectural Digest, August 2017, by Alicia Brunker
This Swedish lighting brand creates light that comes from more than just light bulbs.
Before we could flip a switch to light the chandelier in the entryway or turn on the bedside lamp with a knob, humans relied on fire as their sole source of light after sunset. Back then, a single candle was sufficient for illumination, and no one would have imagined that a lamp could also serve as a form of decoration. Today, Wästberg, a Swedish brand, explores the connection between humanity and light throughout history and, from this, develops lamps that allow customers to reflect on our origins. The brand has created a collection of non-electric lamps rooted in our historical heritage and featuring beautiful designs.
